Proposed improvements citywide and for priority streets
Give input over email or online about our recommendations for citywide pedestrian projects as well as our plans for ten priority streets.
Citywide, we're looking to increase drivers' awareness of pedestrians, who we are trying to make more visible. Our strategies include high visibility crosswalks, improved street lighting and protected left turns - reducing conflicts when drivers might turn left as a pedestrian crosses.
See more information about those strategies in the summary of our Dec. 7 open house, our pedestrian plan website, or our pedestrian improvements toolbox. See examples in the toolbox of strategies like bulb-outs (which shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians), and median refuge islands (which allow pedestrians to cross wide streets in two stages).
We're also proposing specific changes on ten street segments, which were prioritized based on their impact on safety, equity, and an area's demand for walking - especially proximity to transit. See pages 8-17 of our open house summary and the toolbox to learn about our plans for these specific streets:
- San Pablo Avenue, from University to Dwight
- MLK Jr Way, from Hearst to Haste
- Ashby Avenue, from San Pablo to Shattuck
- Adeline Street, from Ashby to the southern border
- University Avenue, from San Pablo to Oxford
- Shattuck Avenue, from Adeline to the southern border
- MLK Jr Way, from Haste to Adeline
- Alcatraz Avenue, from Sacramento to Adeline
- Cedar Street, from Sixth to Stannage
- Sacramento Street, from Dwight to the southern border
Give feedback on citywide improvements, plans for specific streets or other ideas to make it easier to walk in Berkeley. Weigh in on our pedestrian plan website or via email. We are accepting comments by 11:59 pm on Monday, January 20, 2020.
Are there other streets that you're concerned about? Are there locations you're concerned about that the city has not identified? We are proposing lighting in some areas. Be specific about where you would like more or improved lighting. Don't limit your ideas to only what we propose.
This process, which will result in an update to our Pedestrian Plan, will prioritize projects for future funding. Your input will be incorporated when we write the Draft Plan in Spring 2020.
