Project Location
Durant Ave, between 2430 Durant Ave and Bowditch St.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The City will be making changes to curbside parking and loading on the 2400-2500 blocks of Durant Avenue to encourage curbside availability and reduce the potential for double-parked vehicles to interfere with AC Transit operations on the future bus-only lane. More information about future bus lane construction can be found on AC Transit’s Durant Quick Build Project page.
AC Transit is implementing the Durant Quick Build Project, which would construct a bus-only lane from Fulton St to College Ave; three bus boarding bulbs, and a transit signal at Durant and College Ave. In a complimentary but separate project, the City of Berkeley Department of Public Works is proposing to reconfigure parking (curb painting and signs only) on the 2400-2500 blocks of Durant Ave to increase curbside availability for short-term parking and loading and to help address the rampant double-parking that currently occurs in this area. The City-led project is intended reduce the potential for conflicts between double-parked vehicles and future buses operating in the bus-only lane.
The Curb Management Strategy will encourage curbside availability by reducing the amount of 2-hour parking spaces and increasing the amount of 10-minute, 1-hour, and commercial loading zones on this segment of Durant Ave.
The Curb Management Strategy will help pave the way for AC Transit’s Durant Avenue Quick Build, which is consistent with the City of Berkeley’s Transit-First Policy that dates back to 1996. In addition, the two projects help implement the City of Berkeley’s Transit-First Policy Implementation Plan, which was adopted by City Council on March 21, 2023.
Construction schedule
From May 27-May 31, 2024, construction crews will be repainting curbs and changing signage.
