Project Location
Cesar Chavez Park (11 Spinnaker Way, Berkeley, CA 94710)
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Cesar Chavez Park is the site of a former landfill which was closed in 1983, sealed with a clay cap, and, in 1989, had an underground gas collection and control system installed to manage gases emanating from natural biodegradation of landfill matter. As that landfill matter has continued to biodegrade over the past 41 years, the gasses have continued to diminish. This reduction in gasses has, with regulatory approval, allowed for periodic shutdowns of the flare as well permission to use a flare that’s smaller in size to burn off excess gas. We are working closely with environmental regulators to maintain effective controls over operations. This entails system repairs and improvements, regular testing, and weekly and monthly monitoring.
Activities will include closing off small areas of the park to the public. As work continues, the location will change to different areas of the park. The map linked below depicts when each area will be impacted.
The park continues to be a thriving, safe area for dog walkers, kite fliers, and those bringing family for walks. Based on regulator guidance, no additional limits need to be placed on activity in the park.
Major improvements are scheduled to begin May 6th and is estimated to end late June 2024.
