      Summer 2018 Marine Biology and Boating Classes


Registration for summer Marine Biology and On the Water classes begins   
March 10th, 2018 at 9:30am and will continue until classes are full.

 Come with emergency contact numbers and be prepared to sign forms and waivers for your child. You can only register children for whom you are the legal guardian. Bring exact change or a check. We cannot take credit cards, we do not have change. 

After March 10th, check this page for available space. Please call the office (510) 981-6720 to make sure we are available to help you before you come. We teach classes from 9-2pm on some days.

Marine Biology Classes for 5-16 years
Classes are held in the Nature Center and run by naturalist staff. Indoor prep and outdoor hands on exploration of the rocky shore, dock and pier habitats. Microscopes and marine sampling equipment will help us identify local plants and animals. Fantastic class for young explorers who want to learn more about the world around them.

Boating
Children must be 9-16 years old, and have a current 2018 proof of swim ability of at least a low level 4 from a certified Water Safety Instructor. All children will wear personal flotation devices we provide and will be supervised by leaders with a first aid and CPR certification. We spend one day each canoeing, paddling a dragon boat, sailing on a large sail boat and on a small sail boat. Here is the swim form for this program. 

Canoeing
Children must be 9-16 years old, and have a current 2018 proof of swim ability of at least a low level 4 from a certified Water Safety Instructor. All children will wear personal flotation devices we provide and will be supervised by leaders with a first aid and CPR certification.Three days of canoeing fun! We will learn basic canoeing strokes as we paddle in shorebird cove and in the Berkeley Marina's harbor basin. We will even practice a canoe over canoe rescue! Current swim form must be turned for this class. 

Full day program option for marine bio and boating students 7 years or older. Enroll your child in Marine Biology or Boating for half the day and Adventure Playground for the other half. Best for children who are self motivated. Children must be picked up by 4:30 pm. Pick up time is 3:30 pm on staff meeting days: 6/26,7/10,7/24,8/7. More information about the drop-in program here. 

Adventure Playground Summer programs 

 Summer Hours: 
Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.  
Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Adventure Playground is FREE to the general public. Children under 7 years must be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times.

Marina Adventure Programs are for individuals and families, not for groups of 5 or more children. Groups need prior reservations to visit the playground. Group info

Marina Adventures Summer Programs in Adventure Playground  
Marina Adventures Programs listed below are offered on a 
first come first served basis. Sign up in the Adventure Playground on the day of the program, 30 minutes before it starts. 

ALL MARINA ADVENTURES PROGRAMS ARE FREE. Children under seven years must be accompanied by an adult. Limited number of participants and age restrictions may apply to specific activities. Registered drop-ins have first preference.
 

 Our fun summer programs offered by Adventure Playground staff are: 

Monday          Nature Play           2-3:30pm     Mud play, campfires, crafts, hikes & gardening.
Tuesday Games                  2-3:00pm  Capture the flag, obstacle course, water play.
Wednesday Creative Building  2-3:30pm  Fort building, tool workshops, small projects.
Thursday Crafts                    2-3:30pm  Instruments, recycled art, candle making.
Friday Special Activities  2-3:30pm  Join the fun! Treasure hunts, cook outs, egg drop.

If you would like to leave your child (7 years or older child ) in the playground for up to 3 hours, you need to have a current registration form on file. The cost for drop-ins is $10. Payable in the Nature Center in Shorebird Park. Prepaid "playment tickets" are available for $10 a visit and up to 5 visits on each card. Once the registration form is on file in the playground, sign your child in at the front desk and show the staff your receipt or playment ticket. Drop-ins are eligible to participate in Marina Adventures programs listed above. More information about the drop-in program here. There is no charge for children whose parents are participating.
