Share photos, poems, thoughts, stories, and memories of Your Berkeley Pier. Winners will be selected from three categories and will be displayed on the Berkeley Pier Webpage: We will display and credit the winning entry on our website. One Winner will be selected to receive a $100 gift certificate to a waterfront restaurant of his/her choosing.  

Your Berkeley Pier Story can be submitted in any arrangement – photo, drawing, painting, poem, 140 character tweet, essay, story, or video, but must be submitted digitally to  

Please submit entries that convey what the Berkeley Pier means to you. Is it a place to quietly reflect on the breathtaking beauty of our San Francisco Bay? Is it a moment of solitude gazing across the water toward Mount Tam? Is it memories with your parents? Fond recollections of the Striped Bass you caught off the south side of the Pier? Sunset walks with your loved ones? Racing down the Pier on a windy day? Do you dream of once again walking the pier with your own grandchildren? Tell us!

How To Enter

All entries must be submitted via email by the deadline of  Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Please send entries to Entries must include your name, email address, phone number, and a brief description of your “story.”

Entries will be judged on how well they portray the "spirit of Berkeley Pier." The City will notify the winner via the email address provided at the time of entry.

All photo entries must have a resolution of six megapixels or greater. Entries may originate in any format - including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints, or other media, - so long as originals or copies of the original artwork/media are submitted electronically.

Since entry files can be large, the most efficient way to submit them is by creating a folder on Flickr, Box, Dropbox or Google Drive. Email a link to a folder to

If you include people in your photo submission, obtain the necessary releases from the individuals depicted and provide copies of those releases to the City with your submission. Download photo release forms in English or Spanish.

Your Rights

Your “Berkeley Pier Story” entries will help the City create a Berkeley Pier archive for official use, and may be used or referenced in future grant applications. You will retain copyright to any photograph you submit.

If you submit an entry to the Contest, you grant the City of Berkeley a royalty-free, nonexclusive right, in perpetuity, to:

  • Use your entry, a copy of your entry, or a component of your entry in future grant applications 
  • Display your entry in online publications, on the City's webpage, and in social media posts
  • Use your entry in internal and external communications materials including but not limited to fact sheets, newsletters, slide shows, displays, reports and other print materials
  • Retain a digital copy of your entry that may be archived in the City's photo library and accessible to City staff for the purposes enumerated above
  • The City will credit all entries with a caption containing the person's name.
