Emergency Relief for Homeless People, December 2016

Dear Neighbors --

Tuesday morning, I saw a homeless person in our district coughing and doubled over in the rain. He is one of nearly 900 homeless people living in Berkeley. I can no longer stand by and watch our neighbors, many of them elderly and infirmed, be subjected to hunger and freezing rain.

Too often, the pace of bureaucracy does not keep up with human need. On Tuesday night, during my first Council meeting, I called for the creation of a Homeless Czar. Someone to cut through red tape and help people fast. My motion passed unanimously. Now, 24 hours later, there are 130 additional beds at the following heated and warm locations:

First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley on 2407 Dana Street, Berkeley, CA 94704

North Berkeley Senior Center on 1901 Hearst Ave, Berkeley, CA 94709

These 130 beds are in addition to the 140 existing shelter beds the City provides through contracts with Community Agencies. To access a shelter in Berkeley, you can call the reservation line at 1-866-960-2132.

In the next few days, we will finish setting up emergency shelter facilities for 60 days. No longer will our neighbors need to survive amidst the elements.

Meals are also available at the following churches:

- Dorothy Day House at Christ Church at 2138 Cedar Street

- Berkeley Food and Housing Project at 1744 University Ave at the Lutheran Church of the Cross

- McGee Avenue Baptist Church on 1640 Stuart

- St. Paul’s AME Church at 2024 Ashby Avenue

- South Berkeley Community Church at 1802 Fairview St.

- Women’s Daytime Drop In Center at 2218 Acton St.

- All Souls Episcopal Church at 2220 Cedar St.

- St. Mary Magdalene on 2005 Berryman St.

Cheers,
