PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

Welcome to the Land Use Division at the City of Berkeley, CA. We are part of the Department of Planning & Development.

Land Use Planning  is responsible for preparing long-range policy plans for the future development of Berkeley including the General Plan and area plans.  It also manages regulation of proposed development projects under the Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Ordinance.  The Division is staff to several Council-appointed commissions and boards, including the Planning Commission which advises the Council on planning policy; the Zoning Adjustments Board which reviews most proposed development projects; and the Landmarks Preservation Commission which identifies and protects the City’s historic and cultural heritage.  It administers Zoning Regulations, reviews development projects, and reviews Land Use Permits.

COVID-19: Land Use Planning Services - The Permit Service Center is opening on June 15, 2021. Land Use Planning staff will be available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for walk-in services from 8:30am to 4:30pm as well as limited in-take appointments from 9:30am to 10:30am and 1:30pm to 2:30pm Monday through Thursday.
