Free Compost for Berkeley Residents

Compost will now be available all year long. The City of Berkeley offers free compost for Berkeley residents, weather permitting.

This program is "first-come first serve" and is opened to the public after 6:30 A.M. on scheduled dates.  You must hand load the compost yourself. Pick-up trucks must tarp their loads. Please bring your shovels, containers and safety gear. The compost originally comes from the green waste that is collected in the City of Berkeley, which is then brought to a processing plant in the Central Valley where it is converted into a highly aerobic, microbial compost. The compost making process involves the careful mixing of the green waste and monitoring of the carbon to nitrogen ratio, CO2, temperature, and moisture.  On rare occasions, bad weather in the Central Valley can halt the loading at the processing plant which cancels the Berkeley program.

Location: The compost giveaway site is located on the east side of Marina Boulevard at the Berkeley Marina, across the street and just south of the Doubletree Hotel at 200 Marina Boulevard, Berkeley, CA 94710. We look forward to seeing you there!

 When is Compost Available?

Berkeley will be commencing road work improvements for the City’s Marina area roads. This construction will affect the City’s residents ability to access the compost located at the Marina on Mondays through Fridays for the next six (6) months. With this in mind, we will be revising its delivery schedule of finished compost to one (1) load every Friday

 Please Note:

  • The duration that compost remains on site between deliveries changes. Neither 311, PW, or Marina staff are able to provide information about the presence of compost at a given point in time. If you wish to check availability, please do not call. Instead, we recommend you come check on availability and enjoy our beautiful waterfront while you’re here.
  • The city cannot guarantee the schedule nor the availability of compost.  The dates listed above are "target" delivery dates due to the location of in the Central Valley
This information is intended to facilitate and ease the process of compost pick ups, and allow you to time your visit.
