Vision Statement

The Emergency Medical Service Division's primary focus is to develop a community based education program and partnership to emphasize injury and illness prevention, to ensure personnel are trained on the advanced medical standards, to ensure the community's good health and welfare, and to ensure that all care rendered will meet the communities' expectations and satisfaction.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Emergency Medical Services Division is to deliver an effective pre-hospital care and treatment program to the Berkeley community in order to reduce personal loss suffered from unexpected injury or illness.

The Berkeley Fire Department Paramedic Service Plan was developed in 1985; since that time the provision of emergency medical services to citizens in need has become a key aspect in the Department's services.

When an initial call is received, a fire company is dispatched from the closest fire station; these firefighters are trained Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and are able to begin the evaluation and initial treatment. At the same time an ambulance staffed by Firefighter/Paramedics is also dispatched to the scene; the paramedics are able to provide further treatment, stabilize the patient, and transport to an appropriate medical facility. During 2010, there were over 8,300 medical calls.
