COVID-19 Risk Reduction Order
December 5, 2020 | Effective December 7, 2020 | Updated January 9, 2021

This Order defines the current COVID-19 restrictions on activities and gatherings in the City of Berkeley. It was issued on December 5, 2020 to align local restrictions with the State of California's Regional Stay at Home Order.

It closes outdoor dining, hair salons, barbershops, and other personal care services, museums, movies theaters, wineries and bars, and limited services not included in critical infrastructure, and adds new restrictions to retail, hotels, and other sectors that remain open. It prohibits all social gatherings between people not part of the same household.

This Order was updated on January 8, 2021 to state that these restrictions will remain in effect in Berkeley until the Regional Stay at Home Order is rescinded by the State of California.

Isolation & Quarantine
July 15, 2020 | Active

These Orders, issued concurrently, require people who have been diagnosed with or who are likely to have COVID-19 to isolate themselves until at least 1 day has passed since recovery and at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared. The Orders also require people to quarantine themselves if they have been exposed through close contact with someone who has COVID-19, including household contacts, intimate partners, and caregivers.

Mandatory face coverings
June 5, 2020 | Active

Requires everyone to visibly carry face coverings when outside their home, and wear it over their nose and mouth when within 30 feet of others.

Note: Although Berkeley's Order only mandates face coverings for ages 12 and over, the State of California's face covering rules require masks for everyone 2 years and older. When state and local restrictions differ, the stricter of the two rules applies.

  • Face coverings required:
  • Everyone must wear a face covering
  • Everyone must wear a face covering (English/Spanish)
  • Everyone must wear a face covering (English/Spanish/Chinese)

Screening and masks for licensed facilities
April 16, 2020 | Active

Requires symptom checks, temperature screenings, face coverings, and other measures on all workers, visitors, and residents at licensed facilities.

Laboratory test reporting
March 24, 2020 | Active

Required labs to report all COVID-19 test results to state and local public health authorities.
