PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

COVID-19 restrictions on activities and gatherings
Issued September 2, 2020 | Effective September 4, 2020

This Order replaces the previous shelter-in-place Order and aligns allowed activities with the California Blueprint for a Safer Economy. The Order allows hair salons and barbershops to operate indoors and for higher education institutions to open libraries at 25% capacity.

Isolation & Quarantine

These Orders, issued concurrently, require people who have been diagnosed with or who are likely to have COVID-19 to isolate themselves until at least 1 day has passed since recovery and at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared. The Orders also require people to quarantine themselves if they have been exposed through close contact with someone who has COVID-19, including household contacts, intimate partners, and caregivers.

Phased Reopening Order (Shelter in Place Update)

Allows for certain outdoor personal care services, including hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, waxing, and massage to operate outdoors. Allows outdoor vehicle-based gatherings with live entertainment and outdoor wine tasting without food. Allows outdoor pools to reopen.

This Order was updated on August 27, 2020 to reduce the maximum number of children and adults allowed in a childcare group from 15 to 14, in alignment with State of California rules.

Phased Reopening Order (Shelter in Place Update)
Issued June 18, 2020 | Updated July 17, 2020 | Superseded

Allows for indoor and outdoor retail, outdoor dining, and non-contact outdoor fitness, and college sports training to resume. Allows places of worship to hold in-person religious services and cultural ceremonies, of 100 or fewer people, or 25 percent of the capacity of the area in which gatherings take place (whichever is less). Allows for outdoor museums, historical sites, and publicly accessible gardens and vehicle based gathering such as drive-in movies.

Update: This Order was updated July 17, 2020 to prohibit indoor worship services, in alignment with current State of California guidelines. The revised Order also includes additional face covering guidance for outdoor dining, to clarify that restaurant patrons should wear face coverings at all times other than when actively eating or drinking.

Shelter in Place Update

Allows childcare and camps to provide services to all children, permits public libraries to offer curbside pickup services, and allows residential housecleaners, dog walkers, pet grooming, and clothing alteration businesses to resume operations. Allows outdoor gatherings between people who have collectively agreed to limit their in-person social activities to only each other for at least three weeks - a "social bubble."
