Bike Rack Program Timeline and Funding

Update on Current Bicycle Requests

In 2013 the City of Berkeley received an allocation of $150,000 from the Transportation Fund for Clean Air from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.  This funding is for the installation of bike racks and six new in-street "bike corral" high capacity bike parking areas (locations TBD) during 2014 and 2015.  The City currently has a bike corral located on Kittredge Street in front of the Downtown Branch of the Berkeley Public Library.  Following this next round of installations, the City is planning a second allocation of $180,000 from TFCA for more bike racks and 12 additional bike corrals in a subsequent construction project.

The City currently has approximately 115 bicycle rack locations in the queue to be installed.  If you requested a bicycle rack, your request will be installed based on when it was received.  Please see the schedule below:

Fiscal Year 2014/2015 Schedule: 
    June - July 2014:  Prepare bid documents and advertise bike rack installation project for construction     

    July 1, 2014 - Cutoff date for new bike rack requests.  All racks requested on or before this date will be installed as part of

        the 2014-2015 Program        

    August 2014 - September 2014:  Open bids, execute contract documents, issue Notice to Proceed,

        hold preconstruction meeting

    October 2014 - November 2014: Quality control/quality assurance; bike rack samples inspection; place bike rack order

    November 2014 - December 2014: Bike rack fabrication and shipping

    December 2014 - March 2015: Install bike racks (in priority order to be determined by Transportation

        Division of Public Works)

    January 2015 - March 2015: Install bike corrals

Fiscal Year 2015/2016 Annual Bike Rack Installation Project Schedule:
    July 2015-August 2015: Prepare bid documents and advertise bike rack installation project for construction

    December 1, 2015 - Cutoff date for new bike rack requests.  All racks requested on or before this date will be installed as part

    of the FY 2015/2016 Program

    September 2015 - October 2015: Open bids, execute contract documents, issue Notice to Proceed,  

        hold preconstruction meeting

    January 2016 - March 2016:  Install bike racks and bike corrals (in priority order to be determined by Transportation

        Division of Public Works)
