Construction near Shattuck and University

In 2019 through 2020, there are several major public and private construction projects happening in the three blocks of Shattuck Avenue south of University Avenue.

Together, these projects represent a collective investment of more than $250 million in downtown Berkeley. Ultimately they will result in a safer and more vibrant downtown.

The construction period will require periodic closures of traffic lanes and sidewalks around downtown Berkeley. The City of Berkeley and its partners are working diligently to mitigate the impacts on accessibility, small businesses, and the pedestrian experience.

Current street and sidewalk impacts

The changes to normal traffic currently in effect are:

  • Travel lanes on Shattuck Avenue may be reduced to one or two lanes at various times and locations. Efforts will be made to maintain accessible pedestrian pathways whenever possible. However, during major construction activities, sidewalk segments may be reduced in width or closed as necessary. Pedestrian and motor vehicle access around the affected work areas will be maintained through traffic control plans approved by the City Traffic Engineer.

You can find a detailed description of current street and sidewalk closures on this map.
