Registration
|Measure MM Registration| |Fully Covered Rental Unit Registration| |Sorority & Fraternity Summer Rental Registration|
There are different types of units that need to be registered with the Rent Board.
- Measure MM Registration for most rental units that are partially covered by the Rent Ordinance.
- Registration for rental units fully covered by the Rent Ordinance.
- Sorority and Fraternity Summer Rental Registration for rooms rented to non-members.
A partially covered rental unit is covered by the good cause for eviction, but not the rent control sections of the Rent Ordinance.
A fully covered rental unit is covered by both the rent control and good cause for eviction sections of the Rent Ordinance.
It’s important to understand which type of unit you are trying to register because the registration requirements and online registration portals are different. Please read the following carefully.
Measure MM Registration
There are new registration requirements that apply to most units that are partially covered by the Rent Ordinance. Partially covered rental units are covered by the good cause for eviction and security deposit interest, but not the rent control sections of the Rent Ordinance.
Types of partially covered units:
- Single-family homes first re-rented on or after January 1, 1996
- New Construction Units that received a certificate of occupancy after June of 1980
- Most Condominiums
- Units with Section 8 and Shelter Plus tenancies
Not all partially covered units have to register under Measure MM. The Measure MM Registration Page discusses exemptions and has additional information and a button to the Measure MM rent registry portal.
If you feel confident that you are registering or claiming an exemption for a Measure MM unit, you can click on the button below to go directly to the Measure MM rent registry portal.
Fully Covered Rental Unit Registration
These units are covered by the rent stabilization, good cause for eviction, and security deposit interest sections of the Rent Ordinance. These are units where, after the initial rent is set for a new tenancy, rent increases are controlled by the Annual General Adjustment set by the Rent Board.
Types of fully covered rental units:
- Most units on multi-family properties built before June 1980
- Single family homes with current tenancies that began before 1996
- Single family homes with 5 or more rooms rented out individually with separate leases (each room is considered a unit)
If you would like to learn more, the Fully Covered Rental Unit Registration page has additional information and a button to the fully covered unit online registration portal. You can also use the portal to register new tenancies, which must be reported within 15 days of the tenancy start date.
If you feel confident you are registering a fully covered rental unit or tenancy in such a unit, you can click the button below to go straight to the fully covered rental unit rent registration portal.
Sorority & Fraternity Summer Rental Registration
Sororities and fraternities that rent rooms to non-members during the summer must pay a partial registration fee set by the Board each fiscal year.
