FY 2016-2017 REGISTRATION INFORMATION

All rental units covered by the Ordinance should be registered annually by July 1st of each year.

If registration fees are not paid on time, the penalty is 100%.  If you rent out a unit that was formerly exempt, then you must register the unit within 60 days of date that the unit became covered by the Ordinance.

ANNUAL REGISTRATION FEE OF $234 PER UNIT WAS DUE FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2016.  The Rent Stabilization Ordinance requires that payments not received in the Rent Board Office or postmarked by the due date be assessed a 100% penalty. Rental units must be properly registered in order to take rent increases and/or evict tenants. Most property owners may be eligible for a waiver of part or all of the penalty fees if their account is fully paid on or before August 30, 2016. If you have any questions about the registration status of your property, please contact the Rent Board at (510) 981-7368 and ask for our Registration Unit.

At a regularly-scheduled meeting held on May 11, 2016, following a public hearing held on May 2, 2016, the City of Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board adopted Resolution 16-01 setting the annual fiscal year 2016/17 registration fee at $234 per unit effective July 1, 2016. The Board also adopted Resolution 16-02 giving authorization to directly pass through to certain tenants a portion of 2016’s registration fee, not already included as a part of previous Annual General Adjustments, as a temporary general adjustment of rent ceilings, by up to $8 per month. Rent Board staff were also asked to develop a mechanism that allows low-income tenants (at 40% of Area Median Income) to be reimbursed for any pass-through.

Please contact the Rent Stabilization Board at 510-981-7368 (981-RENT) for more information.
