Sacramento Complete Streets Project – Virginia to Addison

This project focuses on designing and constructing pedestrian and bicycle improvements along the Sacramento Street Corridor between Virginia and Addison Streets.  The project features are identified in the City’s 2017 Bicycle Plan and 2010 Pedestrian Plan and are consistent with the City’s Vision Zero policy.  The Caltrans Active Transportation Program is funding a portion of this project.

The project is currently (as of spring 2019) at the start of its community outreach and design phase and includes proposed improvements at the intersections of Virginia, Delaware, University, and Addison.  Construction is anticipated to start in spring 2020.  The scope of these proposed improvements will be based primarily upon the approved grant funding agreement with Caltrans.  Specific improvements under consideration include sidewalk bulbouts and realigned/relocated crosswalks, traffic signal modifications, a new signal or beacon at Virginia, and pavement markings.

One significant improvement would be at the Virginia Street intersection, where a standard-type traffic signal or a pedestrian hybrid beacon would be installed with the goal to provide a safer crossing of Sacramento Street for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The City has invited comments from not only nearby residents and property owners but also BART, AC Transit, Bike East Bay, Walk Bike Berkeley, and others.
