Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza and Transit Area Improvement Project

The Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza and Transit Area Improvement Project will revitalize the Downtown core’s most important public space and improve access for over 17,000 students, residents and employees who travel to or from the Downtown core via transit every weekday, as well as others who pass through the Plaza.  The project is currently under construction and is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2018. The Project is one of three major projects in Downtown Berkeley funded by a 2013 grant from the Alameda County Transportation Commission.

The renovated BART Plaza will improve transit operations and rider experience through a bus-only lane, new BART entry structures, new bus shelters, and better wayfinding. In addition, the project will: reconfigure the public space surrounding the station to increase transparency and maximize user comfort and safety; provide space and infrastructure for arts and entertainment events; replace paving, lighting, trees and landscaping; and incorporate green stormwater treatment features.

Together with the Shattuck Reconfiguration and Pedestrian Safety Project  (scheduled for construction in 2019-20), which will include similar improvements on the east side of Shattuck Avenue, the BART Plaza Improvement Project is an important investment for the City of Berkeley and the Bay Area’s transportation network.

For further questions about the project, please contact Kenneth Jung at (510) 981-7028 or at kjung@cityofberkeley.info.
