Ensuring Accessibility

We oversee the City's efforts to comply with federal laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the 1973 Rehabilitation Act (Section 504). The program develops training and resource material and advises City employees and the public about how to integrate people with disabilities into City activities. In addition, this program plans and oversees efforts to eliminate physical and programmatic barriers in the City's facilities and infrastructure for people with disabilities.

For resources on addressing ADA related issues with private businesses, please see the Disability Compliance page.

Building a Community

Serving citizen needs as effectively and efficiently as possible is our goal in building our community. Needs are identified, planned, designed and managed both proactively and with input from the community. Our innovative approach to service delivery is to work in partnership with Berkeley residents and businesses through coordination, mitigation, and strategic planning. The Engineering Division plans and manages construction contracts to complete improvements to the City's infrastructure: streets, sidewalks, sanitary sewers and storm drain sewers, and utility undergrounding. This division also maintains infrastructure records and provides maps to the public. The division also oversees the construction of new structures such as the Public Safety Building, Animal Shelter, Hills Fire Station, I-80 Bicycle Pedestrian Overpass, and Center Street Garage.

The Transportation Division conducts transportation planning and project implementation, the City's Bike and Pedestrian Plans, management of on-street and off-street parking, including the 3 municipal parking garages, and works on other major projects, such as the redesign of BART Plaza. Traffic engineers manage the City's residential preferential parking (RPP) program, traffic planning, pavement markings and signage, traffic calming, and coordinates projects with other entities, including Caltrans.

Facilities Management

Facilities Management plans and manages improvements to City buildings, and works with the City's engineers to make these structures more seismically safe and accessible to the public. City buildings and other facilities, including park features, parking garages, and senior centers are maintained and cleaned by the Facilities Management group. In addition, this unit oversees City of Berkeley property for lease or sale.

Maintain Our City Infrastructure

Cleaning and repair of streetssidewalks, trails, pathways, curbs, sanitary sewers, and storm drain sewers are coordinated and managed at the Corporation Yard. These efforts promote the efficient functioning of City systems as well as furthering the protection and beautification of our environment. The Electrical Division works to ensure the proper functioning of city streetlights and traffic signals.
