BPD Public Information Officer  (PIO)

The Public Information Officer (PIO) serves as the primary contact for  BPD information and responds to inquiries made by the news media and the community regarding crimes and incidents of interest. Although the PIO is not on-call, the PIO may return for significant events that may generate increased community or media attention.

The PIO works on a weekly basis drafting email communications for media and community distribution and more formal Community and Media Releases as well as Community Crime Alerts as needed. The PIO provides content for several local police crime blotters and briefs, responds to requests for information from the University of California, at Berkeley regarding crimes that fall within the Clery Act boundaries. This content helps create Crime Alerts for UCPD and the neighboring campus community. The PIO fields a variety of inquiries from community members, groups, authors, reporters, screenwriters and producers of television programs.  The PIO completes special internal communication projects for the Chief and members of other Divisions and writes/maintains content for the BPD part of the COB website.

If you would like to make a request for records under the Public Records Act (PRA), you can do so online with the City of Berkeley's NextRequest system or by contacting our Records Unit directly at (510) 981-5750 / PoliceRecords@cityofberkeley.info.

Berkeley Police Open Data Portal
As a matter of public record, you may find the names, age, city of residence, and violation of arrested persons on the City of Berkeley's Open Data Portal. Additionally, the public can find information about persons arrested through the County’s Inmate Locator—(https://www.acgov.org/sheriff_app/).
The portal differentiates between Arrests and Bookings.  The Arrest portion of the portal provides information for adults arrested by the Berkeley Police Department (exclusively) while Bookings may include any law enforcement agency utilizing the Berkeley Jail (not exclusively the Berkeley Police Department).  Arrests include both felonies and misdemeanors and address those persons booked into the jail facility and those cited and released with a future court date.  The data for both are updated each business day (Monday through Friday, excluding holidays) at 9 am.  This information is available regardless of whether or not the arrested person is later formally charged or not.

The attached links are included for your and our community’s use.
