In 1997, Sergeant Michael J. Holland S-8, helped create the City of Berkeley Police Department Historical Preservation Society. It is now known as the Berkeley Police Department Historical Unit. It has been a volunteer effort for the last 14 years with Mike, who retired in 2003, as the driving force behind the efforts to organize, catalog and acquire as much of the retained physical history as possible. In addition to items that can be held and read, Retired Sergeant Holland continues to acquire oral history and confirmation of facts and is continually in the process of trying to purchase or accept donations of items of historic importance.

Sgt. Holland has received many inquiries from family members, friends, historians and others regarding all aspects of BPD history and personnel. He and/or another volunteer work very hard to locate the information that meets the requestors' needs.

With Mike's help and the strong support of the police chief, the department is in the process of creating a non-profit which will be called the Berkeley Police Department Historical Foundation. Some of the goals are to expand the collection of artifacts, purchase displays and framing so more of BPD's firsts and rich history can be shared and receive donations to assist with preservation and collection.
