PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

Welcome to the Successor Agency to the former Berkeley Redevelopment Agency 

As of February 1, 2012, all redevelopment agencies were dissolved due to the December 29, 2011 California Supreme Court action in the California Redevelopment Association v. Matosantos case.

The City of Berkeley is the Successor Agency to the former Berkeley Redevelopment Agency. On January 17, 2011, the City of Berkeley elected to also become the Successor Housing Agency to manage housing assets of the Berkeley Redevelopment Agency.     

The former Berkeley Redevelopment Agency (BRA) managed capital projects and financing, as well as the creation of affordable housing in the West Berkeley and Savo Island Redevelopment Areas.  The West Berkeley Redevelopment Area is bound by University Avenue, I-80, and Sixth and Cedar Streets.  The Savo Island Redevelopment Area is bound by Milvia, Adeline, Ward and Stuart Streets.  In the Savo Island Area, the Agency maintained and rehabilitated several affordable housing units




 Recognized Obligation Payment Schedule

The BRA's efforts in West Berkeley included:

  • West Berkeley Transportation Services Fee (WB TSF) - A draft Nexus Study for Public Review and Commission Consideration is available here. The City Council may consider the establishment of a WB TSF in the future.
  • West Berkeley Circulation Improvement Projects (.pdf) - In June 2010 the Agency funded approximately $650,000 in high priority pedestrian, cyclist and transit stop improvements in West Berkeley.  The funds were transferred to City of Berkeley Public Works for implementation. 
  • Aquatic Park Connection Streetscape Project or APC, including pedestrian and bicycle route improvements, parking and sidewalk improvements, infrastructure and artistic enhancements.
  • Kenney Cottage Garden - Creation of a community garden and relocation of a 1,000 square foot historic community facility for artisans on a former vacant West Berkeley lot.
  • Preservation and creation of long-term affordable rental and ownership housing units. Click here for more information about the Housing Trust Fund to which the Agency contributes funding, administered by the City’s Housing Department.

The Berkeley Redevelopment Agency governance was made up of the members of the City Council with the City Manager serving as the Executive Director.  The West Berkeley Project Area Commission was made up of the Council appointees living, working, or owning property in or proximate to the Redevelopment Area, advised the Agency Board on recommendations for realizing the West Berkeley Redevelopment Plan and fulfillment of the West Berkeley Implementation Plans through July 2010.  Savo Island does not have a citizen advisory committee.
