Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure
Berkeley Building Code Chapter 7A, BMC 19.28.030, and
Berkeley Residential Code R327, BMC 19.28.040
(AKA: Hillside Ordinance)

As mandated by the State of California, the City of Berkeley adopted building standards for the control of fire in local wildland-urban interface areas. The regulations, adopting the State codes and continuing Berkeley’s existing protections, apply to those parcels currently in Fire Zone 3 and in a slightly expanded Fire Zone 2. On January 1, 2011, the Berkeley City Council adopted the new State standards along with local amendments to continue the compatible existing requirements. The revised Chapter 7A of the Berkeley Building Code and R327 of the Berkeley Residential Code, which addresses construction standards in the designated areas, were adopted as Berkeley Municipal Code Sections 19.28.030 and 19.28.040. Building permits applications filed after January 1, 2011 must comply with these standards.
