PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center.  On-Going / Long-Term Opportunities  

BayIT – Nature Education Training – October 2019 thru March 2020
The Bay Interpretive Training Program was developed to train volunteers in nature education techniques to assist Nature Center staff in teaching Bay ecology to local school groups.  The BayIT program involves hands-on training sessions covering such topics as the history of the Bay, marine habitats, and bay shore flora and fauna, with special emphasis on how to teach and use artifacts and live animals. Here is the application for the BayI.T. Program. Trainings are ongoing; you may join the program at any time during the year.  

Volunteers support our programs by creating a positive learning environment where youth can learn skills and character values.  Come volunteer and strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Rose Garden -Tuesday and Fridays (All Year)
Volunteer to assist the City’s Rosarian with maintaining the beauty of the Rose Garden.  Rose handlers, beginners to experts, are welcome at the workday sessions.

Shoreline Cleanups -3rd Saturday of the Month (All Year)
A great volunteer opportunity for all ages.  Come join this local effort to make a difference on our shoreline and oceans.  This is a wonderful way to get outside with friends and family and care for our incredible local habitat.  Bring your own reusable gloves, water bottle and bags/buckets. 

Berkeley Waterfront Weekday clean-up/Court Volunteer Hours
Monday and Fridays (All Year)
The Berkeley Waterfront offers volunteer opportunities for and including Alameda County court workers in need of verified volunteer hours.  This important work reduces the impact of trash in and around our Bay ecosystem and Waterfront parks, supports vegetation growth and park beautification.

Compost Day - Last Saturday of the month February thru October (3rd Sat in July) @ 7:30am; we work to distribute compost to Berkeley residents at the Meadow Lot along Marina Blvd south of the Doubletree Hotel.  If interested, please call 510-981-6731.

 Annual / Once a Year Opportunities


Spring Egg Hung Extravaganza- April 11, 2020
Volunteer for a day will be filled with tons of fun activities including a petting zoo, a visit with the Spring Bunny, spring-themed arts and crafts, an interactive carnival with fun prizes, Bunny Hop dance lessons, and, of course, egg hunts (organized by age)!  Many volunteers are needed.

Berkeley Bay Festival -April 18, 2020
This event is for all ages to experience and learn from the organizations that teach about the environment and recreation on the Bay.  Volunteers will help participants with hand-on educational activities and learn about organizations helping to protect the Bay and its wildlife.

Earth Day Shoreline Clean up -April 25, 2020
Volunteer opportunity for all ages.  Join this local effort to not only enhance the beauty of our environment but also positively impact our shoreline and oceans. This is a wonderful way to get outside with friends and family and care for our incredible local habitat.  


 Echo Lake Camp Work Weekend -June12-14 and September 11-13, 2020
Skilled and general laborers can volunteer to help complete a variety of work projects at Echo Lake Camp before the summer season.  In return, campers will enjoy a fun weekend in the Sierrra with meals provided.

 Bill and Celina Rose 3-on-3 -Tournament –TBA
This annual summer kick-off event is looking for Saturday volunteers.  Watch friends, neighbors and community member compete to be Berkeley’s playground champs.  Enjoy a fun-filled day of basketball, make new friends, and help the tournament runs smoothly and soundly. 

 Community Picnic - June 25, 2020
Join us for our annual Community Picnic as we celebrate the Fourth of July.  Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of activities for youth and teens: 3-on-3 basketball games, waterslides, giant inflatables, wall climbing, cotton candy, petting zoo, snow cones, Tot Zone and more.  Volunteer prep meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.


CaliforniaCoastal Cleanup Day -TBA
Each year more than 2.5 million pounds of debris is removed from the California beaches, rivers, creeks and waterways, so the net environmental impact of this event is tremendously positive.  Come volunteer for this international effort to make a difference on our shoreline and our oceans. 


Harvest Festival -TBA 
Join us as a volunteer to celebrate foods grown, harvested, and prepared by members of the Berkeley community.  In order to inspire more urban farming, more homemade food, and healthier eating, the Food and Garden Exhibitions will host a Crop Swap, Seed Swap and Food Contest. 

BerkeleyProject Day -October 26, 2019 
Come volunteer and work along-side hundreds of UC students.  Twice a year the City of Berkeley Parks Department partners with the University of Berkeley to beautify various city parks and public spaces.  This event provides an opportunity for students to increase their level of social consciousness through hands on community service.  


Winteron the Waterfront -December 14, 2019 
Join us as a volunteer for some winter fun for the whole family!  This event promises to be a lively and festive way to spend a winter day.  We’ll have food, music, games, snow play, and visits with Santa.  Enjoy some of the best views of the Bay while listening to holiday music.

Community All Crew Day –Weekdays
We can help with your project.  Residents can propose a landscape/maintenance work project at a City-owned facility that can be accomplished in one day.  Parks staff reviews the project and if approved, volunteers are joined by staff from urban forestry, parks facilities or landscape maintenance division to spruce up City parks, landscaped medians or complete another projects.

Have an idea for a project?  Residents can propose a landscape/maintenance project at a City-owned facility that can be accomplished in one day.  Provide some details about your site, project, and the number of volunteers that you are expecting, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Event volunteer duties may include:  Greeting patrons, giving directions and providing general program information, staffing display table, assist with move/set up tables, chairs, canopies and signage, monitor children’s activities, litter clean up before, during and after event.  May require long periods of standing, walking or sitting.
