PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

MLK Jr. Youth Services Center / Y.A.P.

The MLK Jr. Youth Services Center offers meaningful recreation experiences that include tutoring, violence prevention, and leadership development components for teens.  Through various programs, such as Afterschool/Summer Achievers, Justice in Action, From Boys to Men, Young Divas, Leadership & Life Academy as well as various service projects and special events, teens are given the opportunity to improve their academics, gain valuable service learning experience, make new friends, go on field trips and enjoy exciting recreation activities.  

This facility is also home to the City of Berkeley Boxing and Teen Programs, as well as the Berkeley Youth Commission (see below).    

 MLK Jr. Youth Services Center Features 

The MLK Jr. Youth Services Center features a gymnasium and meeting rooms that can be reserved and rented by community members.  Rental fees vary by room, day of week, and residency status.  Please call 981-6670 for more information.  This site also has a computer lab, kitchen, as well as outdoor picnic and recreational space.

Youth Commission
Youth Commission identifies youth needs and reviews and recommends programs. Members of the Youth Commission must be Berkeley Residents. Each Council Member appoints one member and the School Board appoints nine members for a total of eighteen members. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Youth Commission, email Ginsi Bryant at gbryant@cityofberkeley.info. Call 981-6671 for more information.

Scholarship Information
Scholarships are available provided applicant meets eligibility and verification requirements. You must submit an application and documentation at the time of registration. Scholarship applications can be obtained at any of the Community Centers or at Recreation Administration, and on the website.  

Refund Policy
All requests for refunds must be directed to the Recreation and Youth Services Manager, 1720 Eight St., Berkeley, CA. 94710. The original receipt must be submitted with a written request for a refund. The request must state the reason for the refund, and the date, time and location of the program. The Recreation and Youth Services Manager will render a decision to either: 1) refund the fee; 2) pro rate the fee; or 3) deny the request.   

No refunds or credit will be granted without 7 days notice prior to start of class. The City will deduct 25% of the amount paid from the Refund to cover administrative expenses, or a minimum $10.00 service charge. A refund will be granted for an individual or family if a doctor’s certificate is provided along with the written request for the refund.
