PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

Adventure Playground Group Reservations

All groups of five or more children must make an advance reservation and pay a fee.
What is a group?
A group is:

  • 5 children or more, regardless of how many adults/parents you have.
  • Organized programs of any size (daycare programs, summer camps. church groups ).
  • Multiple small families who meet at the playground with 5 children or more.
    This includes individuals coming in from gatherings (like birthday parties) happening outside Adventure playground in Shorebird Park.

The Reservation Process


5-10 children  $75 per 2 hours
11-20 children $105 per 2 hours
21-30 children $150 per 2 hours
31-40 children $180 per 2 hours (weekdays only)
  • Weekend time slots are 11a.m.-1p.m. and 1:30p.m.-3:30p.m.
  • Weekday reservations are available for summer
    and  during the school year for large groups (5-40) depending on weather and staff availability.

How to Make a Reservation
Your reservation is not confirmed until all of the following steps are complete: 

  1. Come to the Nature Center or call 510 981-6720, and speak with our staff. Once we have agreed on a date, we will pencil it in on our calendar.
  2. Download the group reservation form.
  3. Fill out the form, and mail it in with your payment. Do not mail your form in without talking to us first, we may not have your date available.
    • Checks should be made out to the City of Berkeley.
    • We do not take credit cards.
    • Payment must be made no later than 2 weeks before the trip.
  4. Once we receive payment, you will receive an email confirmation.

Send in the form and payment ASAP! Your reservation is not complete until payment is received.
We recommend that you call three weeks or more ahead, dates fill fast.                         


  • If you have to cancel your reservation, please call us promptly 510 981-6720 as we have waiting lists for dates.
  • Do not assume we will cancel automatically. We need to hear from you that you are no longer interested in the date.
  • In order to get your money back, you need to cancel no later than 7 days before your reserved date.

What if it rains?
Staff will determine if a date qualifies as a rain date. Approved rain dates can be rescheduled or refunded. If you choose a refund, you will need your original receipt.

All refund requests must have the original receipt and state the reason for the refund, the date, time and location of the program 

  • If your group is smaller than expected, you will not receive a refund.
  • No refund or credit will be granted without 7 days notice prior to the date of the reservation.
  • The city will deduct 25% of the amount paid from the refund to cover administrative expenses.

What to expect at the Playground

What you get when you make a group reservation

  • You will be the only group allowed in during your time slot. We will ask unscheduled groups to leave. If your reservation is during regular open hours, the Playground will still be open to the public.
  • Your group will meet the staff outside at the front of the playground for an orientation which includes learning the rules, a safety talk, and instructions on how to use tools. 
  • Your group gets a guided tour and a demonstration of how to ride the zip line and use the rope swing safely.
  • Adults in the group will be given instructions on how they can help to keep the playground safe by assisting with jobs such as shoveling the sandpile, working with kids in the small wood area, supervising building, and helping at the tool counter. 

Planning your visit

  • Adults with your group are responsible for supervising the children.
  • Adults must read the confirmation information before coming into the playground.
  • Waiver for children whose parents will not be attending the party.
  • Please arrive on time. If you come late, we cannot adjust the time.
  • Scheduled time for a group is 2 hours.
  • Do NOT come directly into the playground with your group. Check in with the Adventure Playground staff
  • The last 15 minutes of your visit should be spent returning tools and cleaning up.
  • Once your reserved group time is over, your whole group must exit the playground for the remainder of the day.

 Using Shorebird Park

  • Please respect the environment here.
  • Place ALL trash in proper receptacles.
  • DO NOT disturb the Marine habitat. Rolling rocks in the intertidal zone kills the plants and animals.
  • Do not feed the ground squirrels, they bite.
  • Do not drive into the park or have loud music.
