PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

John Hinkel Upper Park Improvements

Construction for the John Hinkel Park Improvement Project is expected to begin in October 2019. Renovations include a new accessible pathway from San Diego Road to a new picnic area at the former clubhouse location. Upgrades also include new site furnishings and reconstruction of the entry stairway at Somerset Place. Construction is anticipated to take approximately 4 months to complete depending on weather or unforeseen conditions.

Possible Inconveniences: "No Parking" signs will be posted along the street at least 3 days in advance of construction and will be enforced by the Police Department.  Parking will be restricted to allow for construction access, vehicle movement and staging.  Please see the posted signs for exact hours and locations as they may vary according to scheduled tasks. All other usual parking restrictions, including no parking for street cleaning, will still be in effect.  Traffic may be delayed at the worksite to allow for construction vehicle movement, but the street will not be closed, except under unforeseen circumstances.  Access to private driveways will be maintained.  Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.  


John Hinkel Amphitheatre Area, Parking, Playground and Picnic Area Improvements

The project includes a new playground and picnic area, as well as repairs and accessibility improvements for the John Hinkel Park Amphitheatre at Somerset Place.  Improvements may include reconfigured parking and an accessible path from the parking area, to the playground, picnic and amphitheatre performance area. The overall goal of the project will be to provide a safe and inclusive play, picnic environment and amphitheatre while preserving the historic nature and character of the park. 

A community meeting was held on May 18, 2019 to introduce the project, start a conversation about the issues and opportunities in this area of the park, and solicit feedback on the conceptual design ideas that were presented.
