Department Selection Interview:

All candidates who pass the written exam will be placed on an "eligibility list" and will be invited to participate in the first round of interviews with the Department.

The Department Selection Interview is a structured oral interview conducted by a panel of sworn fire department members. Each applicant is asked the same set of questions; the questions generally address preparedness for the position of firefighter/paramedic. In addition the interviews allow the fire department to learn about the candidates' background, skills, qualifications, education, experience, and interests.

Interview questions may be based on the following topics; the Berkeley community; City and/or Department goals & priorities; city/department demographics and vital statistics; personal community service experience; personal ethics and morals; prior fire/EMS experience; job preparation; motivation; interpersonal skills; problem solving and critical thinking skills; and educational background.

An interview typically lasts 20-30 minutes. Candidates should plan their day accordingly, arriving at the interview site several minutes before their scheduled interview time, and allowing adequate time for transportation, including parking. A parking garage  and the Downtown Berkeley BART Station are both located several blocks away from the department.

Some candidates who successfully complete the Department Selection Interview will be invited to participate in a Chief's Interview & Paramedic Skills Assessment.
