Chief's Interview:

A selected number of candidates who successfully complete the Department Selection Interview will advance to the second round of interviews with the Chiefs, which includes a paramedic skills assessment.  This is a critical phase in the applicant process since it will give the Department an opportunity to meet with you and make an evaluation of your knowledge, skills and abilities.

The Chief's Interview is a structured oral interview conducted by a panel of the Department’s Chief Officers. Each candidate is asked the same set of questions; the questions generally address your preparedness for the position of firefighter/paramedic. This interview differs from the Department Selection Interview in that candidates may be asked situational questions which are designed to assess your skill and experience as a Paramedic. This interview is designed to be challenging and to provoke critical thinking.

As with all parts of the Testing and Department Selection Process it is strongly advised that you prepare. Some tips for preparation include:

  • Ensuring you have a solid understanding of the City of Berkeley, including highlights, current issues, politics, programs, and general demographics of the City itself.
  • Visiting with others who have taken previous exams and getting feedback from them which may help you prepare for your exam.
  • Practicing delivery of your resume, learning how to integrate personal experiences in each answer is a large component of refining your general presentation. You should be as natural and open during this phase of the process as possible.
