FIRE PREVENTION

Our goal in the Fire Prevention Division is to decrease the number and severity of all fires within our City.  We believe this can be accomplished through an active code enforcement program, public education activities, engineering and plans review, and vegetation management.  We strive to provide these services utilizing well trained and highly motivated personnel who understand the importance of customer service and fire safety education.

When fires do occur, our staff members are very well trained and equipped to provide thorough fire origin and cause investigations, and if needed, prosecute those who are responsible for setting illegal fire within our City.

Back in 1997, the City Council approved an assessment district in our hills area of the City.  This program has come to an end however many of those residents who live in our hills have been educated on proactive vegetation management techniques and practices. The danger from wildfire still exists within our hill’s area, and the continued commitment of our residents within these areas to remain proactive regarding vegetation management remains critical.  In addition the Fire Prevention Division will continue to be a strong advocate for fire safety within this area as well.

The combustible vegetation removal program, including the popular chipper and debris box program will continue through funding provided by a surcharge on the refuse bills for the residents in the hill areas. If you should require additional information regarding this matter or any other fire prevention matter, you may contact us at (510) 981-5585.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Fire Prevention Division is to improve the quality of life for the Berkeley community through risk assessment, code enforcement, fire investigation, public education, and vegetation management.
