- Registration for Berkeley Echo Lake Camp began on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Below you will find detailed information to help you plan for a fabulous summer. As always you can count on Echo Lake Camp continuing to provide the fun and memorable traditions that it always has. Echo Lake Family Campers and 50 & Better Campers are sure to notice one change to our registration process - you can use our online registration system to register and pay for camp. Family Camp will be offered in session lengths instead of a quarter day system (two 7-day sessions and one 5-day session will be offered). This year, Family Camp fees are per tent, not per individual.
Echo Lake Youth Camp will offer one 6-day youth camp session, and five 7-day long camp sessions. One notable change to our Recreation Division programs this year is that bus transportation will not be provided for our Echo Lake Youth Camp or Counselor-In-Training (CIT) programs, 50 & Better Camp, or Berkeley Day Camp Programs.

Since space is limited and we have experienced high demand for these programs in the past, we recommend reviewing the registration schedule below carefully and setting up a user account in our online registration system. Phone Registration
Campers may contact the Recreation Administration office at (510) 981-5140 to complete registrations over the phone. Due to high call volumes on registration opening days, phone registrations will only be accepted 30 minutes after the start of online registration, and as Recreation Administration staff are available to process phone transactions.
Our office will require additional information following registration, including completion of participant waivers, reviewing parent packets, and completing any required supplemental health history forms.
To place a phone registration, call our Recreation Administration Office at (510) 981-5140.
What if I don’t have access to or can’t utilize the Online Registration System?
Campers unable to utilize online registration may complete a phone registration (see above), or, complete an application for a limited number of spaces reserved for each of our Camp sessions for individuals who have limited access or an inability to utilize our online registration system. To apply for one of these spaces, please contact our Recreation Administration office at (510) 981-5140 no later than March 26, 2021.
After March 26, 2021 City staff will review applications to verify eligibility, then complete a lottery draw to place eligible campers into available sessions. If you are selected during the lottery, City staff will contact you to complete registration and session payment.
Since demand for these limited number of spaces may be high, and since there is no guarantee of placement since this is a lottery draw, we encourage ALL campers to attempt to utilize the online registration system to complete their transaction.

About Echo Lake Camp

The City of Berkeley Echo Lake Camp has been operated under a Special Use Permit with the U.S. Forest Service since 1922. Echo Lake Camp is steeped in tradition and has a unique history. Legendary environmentalist, David Brower, was introduced to the Sierra Club at Echo Lake Camp as a young clerk, and Edmund Hillary dined at Echo Lake Camp the summer after the first ascent of Mt. Everest. Generations have marveled at the 40-mile vistas, the dark night sky dome and the sunrise above the mountains to the east.
Echo Lake is only a fifteen minute walk from camp. Offering a several mile expanse of cool mountain water, swimming, fishing, and canoeing, Echo Lake is a favorite destination for campers. It is also the gateway to the immense Desolation Wilderness Area offering miles of hiking among the numerous alpine lakes, streams, peaks and meadows. The famous Pacific Crest Trail runs through the camp on its 2700 mile route from Mexico to Canada. The site is actually located directly on the Pacific Crest of the High Sierra meaning that a cup of water spilled on the eastern side of Cabin 26 runs to the deserts of the Great Basin while a cup spilled on the west side runs past Berkeley to the Pacific! The camp itself offers, a heated pool, basketball, volleyball, bocce ball, disc-golf, archery, an observation deck, campfires and music programs. Arts and crafts are available in the recreation lodge, which has fantastic views. At 7,400’ elevation, mild days and cool nights are punctuated by the occasional afternoon thundershower that clears in time to provide spectacular sunsets and alpenglow over the peaks to the west. Hot showers and bathrooms are located throughout the site as are picnic tables and seating.
Although the camp is distinctly wilderness in nature and tradition, all modern conveniences are available just 15 minutes away in world-famous South Lake Tahoe.
