Welcome to the Parks Recreation & Waterfront Department site at the City of Berkeley, CA.

The Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department (PRW) is made up of five divisions; Parks Maintenance, Recreation and Youth Services, Waterfront, Capital Projects and the Administration Division which supports the entire department.  PRW is committed to administering excellent recreation programs at our centers, resident camps, waterfront and parks; maintaining our municipal urban forest, landscaping and infrastructure; and developing capital projects that create community.

Willard Park Tot Lot Reopening - The Willard Park Tot area and pathway project is complete! Help us celebrate the grand reopening on Wednesday September 20th from 10 AM till Noon. The ribbon cutting will be at 11 AM.

This has been a two part project which included the renovation of the tennis courts in early 2016 and most recently a renovation of the tot-lot and some of the associated pathways. Phase two of this project cost approximately $485,000 and was funded by Measure WW (EBRPD Bond) and Parks Tax Funds (Measure F) and General Fund.   

Contributing to the project is Redwood Engineering, construction contractor; McArdle Design, designer; KPM Consulting LLC, construction manager; and City staff person Evelyn Chan is the project manager. [more...]

Capital Improvement Program (CIP) - PRW’s capital funding is made up of Recurring Capital from the Parks Tax, General Fund, Marina Fund and the Camps Fund. This $1.7 M, along with Bond Measure funds from Measure WW and now T1 Bond Measure funds are used to address our most critical unfunded needs. Measure F, the 2014 Parks Tax increase approved by Berkeley voters has increased parks tax yearly capital from $250,000 to $1,000,000 since FY2016. Capital Improvements include safety and accessibility; replacing deteriorated play equipment, repairing or replacing site furnishings; improvement to existing playing field and basic infrastructure improvements. Measure T1 -$100 Million to Improve Existing City Infrastructure & Facilities - On Tuesday, November 8, 2016 Berkeley voters passed Measure T1 with an 86.5% approval.  This measure authorizes the City to sell $100 million of General Obligation Bonds (GO Bonds) to repair, renovate, replace, or reconstruct the City’s aging infrastructure and facilities, including sidewalks, storm drains, parks, streets, senior and recreation centers, and other important City facilities and buildings. After 6 months of community process, on June 27, 2017 the City Council approved a list of proposed projects.  Explore the funded T1 projects and their location in this interactive story map. Grove Park Update - Through the City RFP process, staff went out to bid to replace and renovate two and a half basketball courts, three tennis courts and the associated lighting at Grove Park.  [more...]

Aquatic Park Widgeon Grass and Algae Update - The Aquatic Park lagoon has a more than usual population of Widgeon Grass.  It is a salt tolerant freshwater species that grows in brackish water.  It can be seen covering the surface of the lagoon during its spring growth period.  The plant grows rapidly in the spring and the City harvests the grass every year in July and early August. MLK Civic Center Park Closure - MLK Civic Center Park will be closed for maintenance from October 16- December 31, 2017. During that time staff will be performing maintenance work to all turf areas, the upper plaza, the tot lot, tile, fountain cover, concrete and other areas.
