Welcome to the Parks Recreation & Waterfront Department site at the City of Berkeley, CA.

The Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department (PRW) is made up of five divisions; Parks Maintenance, Recreation and Youth Services, Waterfront, Capital Projects and the Administration Division which supports the entire department.  PRW is committed to administering excellent recreation programs at our centers, resident camps, waterfront and parks; maintaining our municipal urban forest, landscaping and infrastructure; and developing capital projects that create community.

Winter Closure Notice for Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex -  Standard Winter Closure:  The grass sports fields at the Tom Bates Regional Sports Fields complex will be closed for standard annual rehabilitation during the winter season from November 27, 2017 through Sunday, March 4, 2018. Grove Park Update - The renovation at the Grove Park Tennis and Basketball Courts is nearing completion, when it will create a centerpiece for a neighborhood and a destination for our entire community. The re-vamped tennis and basketball courts will give players surfaces that are more fun to play on while also being more durable. New lighting will create a better environment for nighttime games and matches. A key feature of the renovations was to remove barriers and increase access for all people, regardless of ability - especially in the completely renovated bathroom, bleachers, doors and gates. Capital Improvement Program (CIP) - PRW’s capital funding is made up of Recurring Capital from the Parks Tax, General Fund, Marina Fund and the Camps Fund. This $1.7 M, along with Bond Measure funds from Measure WW and now T1 Bond Measure funds are used to address our most critical unfunded needs. Measure F, the 2014 Parks Tax increase approved by Berkeley voters has increased parks tax yearly capital from $250,000 to $1,000,000 since FY2016. Capital Improvements include safety and accessibility; replacing deteriorated play equipment, repairing or replacing site furnishings; improvement to existing playing field and basic infrastructure improvements. Measure T1 -$100 Million to Improve Existing City Infrastructure & Facilities - On Tuesday, November 8, 2016 Berkeley voters passed Measure T1 with an 86.5% approval.  This measure authorizes the City to sell $100 million of General Obligation Bonds (GO Bonds) to repair, renovate, replace, or reconstruct the City’s aging infrastructure and facilities, including sidewalks, storm drains, parks, streets, senior and recreation centers, and other important City facilities and buildings. After 6 months of community process, on June 27, 2017 the City Council approved a list of proposed projects.  Explore the funded T1 projects and their location in this interactive story map. MLK Civic Center Park Closure - MLK Civic Center Park will be closed for maintenance from October 16- December 31, 2017.  During that time, staff will be performing maintenance work to all grass turf areas, the upper plaza, the tot lot, tile, fountain cover, concrete pathways, and other areas. Aquatic Park Widgeon Grass and Algae Update - The Aquatic Park lagoon has a more than usual population of Widgeon Grass.  It is a salt tolerant freshwater species that grows in brackish water.  It can be seen covering the surface of the lagoon during its spring growth period.  The plant grows rapidly in the spring and the City harvests the grass every year in July and early August.
