News From Councilmember Ben Bartlett, January 2017

Dear Neighbors --

Thank you for trusting me to represent you. Since my inauguration, my staff and I have hit the ground running to tackle issues that are important to the community.

Below are some updates about work that has been done and upcoming community events. As always, please feel free to contact me with any ideas, questions, comments or suggestions.

Recent Successes

Socially Responsible Banking Services for the City of Berkeley. Berkeley's banking services provider has engaged in unethical activities including charging unnecessary fees to clients and investing in the Dakota Access Pipeline. We co-sponsored Councilmember Maio's initiative to instruct the City of Berkeley to re-evaluate its banking services provider. This passed by unanimous vote.

Berkeley Inclusion In Opportunity Index. “BINDEX” is a social equity tool we introduced to help local businesses and non-profits gain equal access to Berkeley’s $390 million budget. BINDEX passed by unanimous vote.

Shut Down Massage Parlor Suspected of Illegal Activity. Neighbors alerted us to a massage parlor they suspected might be engaging in illegal activity. We investigated the situation and shut it down immediately.

Support for SB 54 California Values Act. SB 54 ensures that state and local resources are not called upon to fuel deportations, separate families, or divide Californians on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or immigration status. We co-sponsored an initiative to send a letter of support to our Senators, Assemblymembers and Governer in support of this Act. This passed by unanimous vote.
