Logo BPDIn order to qualify for the Police Officer position with the City of Berkeley, applicants should have obtained:

By the final filing date

  • At least 20 ½ years of age; and
  • Have completed 60 semester or 90 quarter units of college coursework in police science, public administration, psychology or a related field.

Aside from having to meet the above requirements, California Government Code requires graduates of non-U.S. high schools to have passed a GED test, or possess a 2-year college degree. Defense Department high schools are considered U.S. high schools.

At the time of appointment

  • Be at least 21 years of age;
  • Be a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship;
  • Possess a current, valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must possess satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye, and be able to meet physical, psychological and background standards.

Police Officer Recruit

In order to qualify for the Police Officer Recruit testing, you must meet the minimum age and education requirement listed above by the final filing date of the application process.

This is the entry-level for persons who have not yet completed the CA P.O.S.T. certified police academy. Upon hire, Police Officer Recruits will be required to attend and successfully complete the CA P.O.S.T. police academy which is paid for by the City.

Lateral Police Officers

Lateral candidates must have the minimum qualifications listed above in addition to the following:

  • Police Officer Lateral I: This is the academy-trained level, which is conferred upon successful completion of the California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy. Academy graduation must have been within the last three years.
  • Police Officer Lateral II: This is the experienced level for candidates who have a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and have successfully completed the probationary employment period with a law enforcement agency in the State of California. The employment must have been within the last three years.

Reserve Police Officers

This is an hourly position with the City’s Police Reserve Unit. Candidates must have completed the P.O.S.T. Basic Academy within the past three years; or possess a current P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate; or be employed as a Reserve I Officer in California; or have retired as a California Peace Officer within the past three years.
