The Communicable Disease Control Program works in partnership with the medical and neighborhood communities to control and prevent the occurrence and spread of communicable diseases through prevention, surveillance and outbreak control.

Physicians who need to report a suspected public health emergency should contact the Public Health Division immediately at (510) 981-5300; or AFTER HOURS, call Berkeley Police Dispatch at (510) 981-5911 and ask for the Health Officer on Call.

The program aims to: 

  1. Investigate disease outbreaks and recommend control measures

  2. Conduct special studies and projects

  3. Produce annual reports, special analyses, and procedure manuals 

  1. Set policy and make procedure recommendations for activities related to infectious and communicable diseases

  2. Interpret and enforce State and Federal laws and regulations

  3. Interface with other local, state, and federal agencies, professional societies, and programs concerned with public health
