Building Demolitions - Description:
It is the expectation of the City of Berkeley that all building demolitions will be carried out in a manner conducive to public safety. This includes the prevention of debris falling into the public right-of-way or onto adjoining properties, and prompt and proper disposal of all debris. Building Energy Saving Ordinance (BESO) - BESO requires building owners and homeowners to complete and publicly report comprehensive energy assessments to uncover energy saving opportunities. The assessments are conducted by registered energy assessors who provide tailored recommendations on how to save energy and link building owners to incentive programs for energy efficiency upgrade projects, such as Energy Upgrade California. Energy efficiency improvements are voluntary and encouraged. BESO is required prior to sale of a house or whole building under 25,000 square feet, and on a phased-in schedule for multifamily and commercial buildings. [more...]

Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire ExposureBerkeley Building Code Chapter 7A, BMC 19.28.030, andBerkeley Residential Code R327, BMC 19.28.040(AKA: Hillside Ordinance) - As mandated by the State of California, the City of Berkeley adopted building standards for the control of fire in local wildland-urban interface areas. The regulations, adopting the State codes and continuing Berkeley’s existing protections, apply to those parcels currently in Fire Zone 3 and in a slightly expanded Fire Zone 2. On January 1, 2011, the Berkeley City Council adopted the new State standards along with local amendments to continue the compatible existing requirements. The revised Chapter 7A of the Berkeley Building Code and R327 of the Berkeley Residential Code, which addresses construction standards in the designated areas, were adopted as Berkeley Municipal Code Sections 19.28.030 and 19.28.040.
