PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

Soft Story Program - Regulations for Potentially Hazardous Buildings Containing Soft, Weak or Open Front Stories - The City of Berkeley requires owners of owners of soft, weak or open front (SWOF) buildings with five or more dwelling units to retrofit their buildings per Berkeley Municipal Code Chapter 19.39. Owners were required to apply for a building permit by December 31, 2016 and have two years to complete the work after submitting their permit application.     Unreinforced Masonry Buildings - Unreinforced masonry buildings are generally brick buildings constructed prior to modern earthquake-resistant design.
