Current Design and Construction Projects: - The following Capital Improvement Projects are fully funded and underway at the Berkeley Waterfront:

Construction is now in progress on the following projects:

Berkeley Sportsman's Center:Wall Repair and Accessibility Improvements: Construction has begun at the Bait Shop on University Avenue. This project includes structural repairs, as well as improvements to the accessibility of the pathway around the shop's perimeter. These improvements will be complete by Winter, 2016.

Launch Ramp Parking Gate Installation: In an effort to fully automate our payment collection, the City of Berkeley Parks Recreation and Waterfront Department is installing a new gate system at the entrance and exit of the Launch Ramp parking lot. The gates will be connected to a payment system in an effort to ensure that those customers using the launch ramp pay prior to using the facilities. A Request for Proposals for the completion of this study was released in Fall, 2016, and construction began on Monday, October 10, 2016.

Planning and preparations are underway for the following projects:

Berkeley Pier Structural Assessment Study: The Parks Recreation and Waterfront Department will be proceeding with a comprehensive structural condition assessment study this Spring, 2017. The aim of the study is to provide a complete understanding of the structural deficiencies at the Pier and develop repair alternatives and options for consideration. A Request for Proposals for the completion of this study has been released and can be found here (Click top open on a new tab).

Bay Trail Extension:
The Bay Trail pathway though the Berkeley Waterfront will soon extend to Adventure Playground. Environmental Review is currently in progress. The Parks Recreation and Waterfront Department has scheduled improvements to begin by Spring, 2018.

South Cove Parking Lot and Restroom Project: To better serve Waterfront visitors, the City of Berkeley Parks Recreation and Waterfront Department will be updating the eastern portion of the South Cove parking area. This project includes new grading, paving, striping, and a brand new, family-friendly public restroom facility. Environmental review is in progress. The parking lot improvements are expected to be complete in Fall, 2017, and the Restrooms are expected to be installed by the end of Winter, 2017.

University Avenue Improvements Study: The Parks Recreation and Waterfront Department is studying alternative approaches for reconstructing and improving University Avenue, the gateway to the Berkeley Waterfront. This roadway was originally constructed on top of the railroad pilings of the Berkeley Pier. As the bay mud settled around the pilings, the road settled as well, creating the bumpy southern lanes that we drive over today. The first phase of this project was a traffic study, which was completed in Summer 2016. Now, the Parks Recreation and Waterfront Department is working with a consultant to design and evaluate, and cost-out various conceptual alternatives that would improve this important section of University Avenue.
