    Registration Information

     Scholarship Application

    Scholarships Scholarships are available provided applicant meets eligibility and verification requirements. You must submit an application and documentation at the time of registration. Scholarship applications can be obtained at any of the Community Centers or at Recreation Administration, and on the website.


    Refund Policy        

    All requests for refunds must be directed to the Recreation & Youth Services Manager, Recreation Division, 2701 Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94705. The original receipt must be submitted with a written request for a refund. The request must state the reason for the refund, and the date, time and location of the program. The Rec­reation and Youth Services Manager will render a decision to either: 1) refund the fee; 2) pro-rate the fee; 3) apply the fees to another session or program; or 4) deny the request.

    No refunds or credit will be granted without 7 days notice prior to start of class or date of reservation. The City will deduct 25% of the amount paid from the refund to cover administration expenses or will add a minimum $10.00 service charge.

    MLK Jr. Youth Services Center -

    MLK Jr. Youth Services Center / Y.A.P.

    The MLK Jr. Youth Services Center offers meaningful recreation experiences that include tutoring, violence prevention, and leadership development components for teens and young adults.  Through various programs, such as Afterschool/Summer Achievers, Justice in Action, From Boys to Men, and Young Divas, as well as various service projects and special events, teens are given the opportunity to improve their academics, gain valuable service learning experience, make new friends, go on field trips and enjoy exciting recreation activities.  

    This facility is also home to the City of Berkeley Boxing and Teen Programs, as well as the Berkeley Youth Commission (see below).    

     MLK Jr. Youth Services Center Features 

    The MLK Jr. Youth Services Center features a gymnasium and meeting rooms that can be reserved and rented by community members.  Rental fees vary by room, day of week, and residency status.  Please call 981-6671 for more information.  This site also has a computer lab, kitchen, as well as outdoor picnic and recreational space.

    The City of Berkeley’s Shorebird Park Nature Center is the first municipal strawbale building in the United States. It has a solar hot water radiant system to provide heating year-round in the cool marina climate, and a solar photovoltaic electrical system to power the aquariums, computers, lighting and other equipment.   Our  Straw Bale building  is  the Nature/Visitors Center and Office. Here you'll find  a 50 gallon salt tank, a 30 gallon fresh water tank and displays on Marine mammals and birds.The building itself is a display on green building.  The Visitors' Center provides information to visitors concerning all areas of recreation and marine conservation and education.  We do group tours which include watching a video on the process of building this building.

    Schools and/ or teachers who would like more information should contact the center's program coordinator Anthony DeCicco.  This is also the office for the Adventure Playground, and we do the Shoreline cleanups year round.
