California's and the City of Berkeley codes and regulations can be challenging for its citizens. The OED team understands that not everyone is familiar with the rules and processes that are involved and we take a solution based approach to make our client interactions as trouble-free as possible. OED team members provide direct assistance, case management and advocacy for local businesses to help them get established and thrive in Berkeley. Staff can provide assistance with the identification of prospective sites in Berkeley, environmental review (CEQA), zoning regulations, navigating the permitting process, Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) regulations, accessing City resources, engaging with neighboring businesses and stakeholders, analyzing business plans, civic projects, marketing and business networking.

STARTING A BUSINESS IN BERKELEY

The Office of Economic Development (OED) has prepared this Berkeley Business Resource Guide to help clarify the start-up process for businesses in Berkeley.

The guide provides vital information for obtaining the proper authority to begin a business through the Permit and Licensing requirements. It also provides resources for permit and licensing requirements at Business Resource Guidethe State, County and Federal levels and includes tips on where to find technical assistance or financial resources for new endeavors. In the Resource Guide you will find contact information for the Berkeley’s Chamber of Commerce and other Berkeley Business Associations, which support growing businesses in our community.

We also have compiled Berkeley Businesses License Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and encourage you to call or email the city customer service desk for real time updates. The 311-Customer service center can be reached by dialing 311 inside city limits or 510-981-CITY (2489).
