Bulky Waste Pick-up Guidelines 

The City of Berkeley offers 1 Bulky Waste Pick-up per calendar year for single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings up to 4 units. Advance appointments are required, and must be scheduled by the property owner. Bulky appointments are made for Wednesdays only.

To participate in the Bulky Waste Pick-up Service:

  • Your Pick-up can be scheduled for a Wednesday throughout the year (unless this is a refuse collection holiday).
  • The property owner must make the appointment for the Bulky Waste Pick-up. Please call Customer Service in advance of your preferred date. Your appointment date is subject to availability.

  • If you have to cancel your appointment, please call Customer Service no later than 2:00pm on the business day before:

  • If you forget to put out your items on the day of your appointment, you will have to wait until next year for another appointment.

Quantity Limit: The maximum amount of trash per residence is 3 cubic yards (9' x 3' x 3'). This is the equivalent of 20 large (32-gallon) garbage bags. If your material exceeds this limit, you may be charged a fee for the additional amount.

Appointment Day Instructions: Set out materials curbside by 7:00 am on your Pick-up appointment day. Do not set out material more than 1 day ahead of your Pick-up appointment.

Set-out Location: Place your material at the curb. Material will NOT be collected from private property. Please do not block the sidewalk. Ideal placement is on the parking strip between the street and the sidewalk.

Materials & Items Acceptable for Bulky Pick-up - All small items must be bagged or boxed.


  • Bulky household items
  • Painted or stained wood smaller than 5'
    • Doors must be cut in half at width
    • Small pieces of wood must be bundled
  • Rugs rolled at 5' lengths up to 12" diameter
  • Small appliances (maximum weight: 50lbs; maximum size: 24")
  • Sinks and toilets
  • Bed frames
  • Mattresses
  • All small items must be boxed or bagged

These Items Are NOT Acceptable for Pick-up

  • No large appliances (maximum weight: 50lbs; maximum size: 24")
  • No refrigerated appliances
  • No items longer than 5' or heavier than 50lbs (sofas and mattresses okay)
  • No recyclables (please use blue cart for weekly curbside recycling collection)
  • No plant debris or food waste (please use green cart for weekly collection, or purchase excess plant debris bags)
  • No construction or demolition debris
  • No rocks, dirt, or concrete
  • No tires or auto parts
  • No televisions or computer monitors
  • No hazardous waste

Give Reusable Items a 2nd Chance!
