Disaster Preparedness

The City of Berkeley's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is offering free emergency preparedness classes to anyone who lives or works in Berkeley.  The urgency for all of us in the Bay Area to continue preparing for earthquakes is validated by the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientists who conclude that there is a 62% probability of at least one magnitude 6.7 or greater quake striking the Bay Area before 2032.

OES offers a series of free preparedness classes, known as Community Emergency Response Training (CERT).  Classes range from basic personal preparedness, light search and rescue to disaster first-aid.

The City of Berkeley awards emergency supply caches to neighborhoods that show a high degree of preparedness by meeting certain criteria: they have been organized for at least three years, they have satisfied six of the "Nine Steps to Become a Disaster Resistant Neighborhood/Group", and a minimum of 8 people have trained and formed into Disaster First Aid, Fire Suppression and Light Search and Rescue teams.  Each cache awarded in the latest round is valued at $2,800.  The equipment cache includes a 6,250-watt generator, disaster medical kit, simple prying and lifting tools, portable lights, fire extinguishers, smaller fire hose and adapters, and 6 portable radios.

For more information, contact Dory Ehrlich, Berkeley's Office of Emergency Services at (510) 981-5506.  You can also register online at www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/fire/oes.html.

The Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society (BEBHS) also provides a workshop focusing on animal disaster relief and how to prepare yourself and your pets for a disaster and how best to help your community.  Topics covered will be what to include in a pet first aid kit, do you have a sturdy crate or pet carrier and copies of your pet's vaccination and history readily available.  There may be a fee/donation for this workshop.  For information, please contact BEBHS Training Department at 510-845-7735 ext. 22 or email training@berkeleyhumane.org.  Berkeley's Office of Emergency Services (510-981-5506) is helping to promote this program.
