TWO SUSPECTS CHARGED WITH ARMED ROBBERY

Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 21, 2021) - On October 19th at about 7:16 am, a man in his 50’s was walking on the 2300 block of Glen Avenue carrying a bag of groceries.  While walking, the man noticed a vehicle slowly pull in front of him.  When the vehicle stopped, a suspect got out the vehicle and approached the man armed with a shotgun.  The suspect demanded the man’s cellphone and wallet, while a second suspect got out of the car and searched through the man’s bag of groceries.  After taking the man’s cellphone and wallet, the suspects got back in their car and drove off.  Already near his residence, the man was able to return home and report the robbery a few minutes later.

While officers were responding to the reported armed robbery, an officer patrolling northwest Berkeley spotted the suspect vehicle driving north on San Pablo Avenue, just across the Berkeley/Albany border.  When the officer began following the suspect vehicle, it quickly turned into the Kaady Car Wash parking lot.  Just as the officer pulled behind the vehicle in the parking lot, one of the occupants of the vehicle ran away and jumped over a nearby fence—leaving two others (a man and woman) still inside the vehicle.

While additional officers responded to the scene to search for the suspect that ran away, the officer detained the two remaining suspects.  When officers searched the two remaining suspects, they found that the male suspect had a “shaved key”, which are often used in auto thefts.  When officers searched the female suspect’s backpack, they discovered the victim’s stolen cellphone.  When officers searched the vehicle, they found the victim’s stolen wallet as well as a modified shotgun that was hidden in the center console area.

Although the suspect that ran away has not yet been located, detectives later identified him as a 27-year-old man, no address from the San Pablo area).

On October 20th, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the male suspect (a 28-year-old man, no address) with PC 211—Robbery, PC 12022(a)(1)—being armed during the commission of a felony, and PC 29800(a)(1)—being a felon or addict in the possession of a firearm.  The female suspect (a 29-year-old Richmond woman) was charged with PC 496(a)—possession of stolen property.
