Press Contact: A. McDougall, Officer, (510) 981-5773SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR BRANDISHING
Berkeley, California (Thursday, March 18, 2021) -
On March 16th 2021 around 11:46 a.m., BPD received several calls of a male suspect, who was accompanied by a female, brandishing a firearm at workers near Stuart Street and Benvenue Avenue. Patrol officers located a man and woman matching the description given by the reporting parties. Officers detained both individuals. The witnesses positively identified the male as the person who brandished them with an apparent firearm. The female was found to be in possession of a homemade replica gun that appeared to be the object the male used in the brandishing (see attached photo). During their investigation officers also determined the male had prowled in the bed of a pickup truck which was parked on the street, possibly attempting to steal tools. This was interrupted by the truck’s owner, who was sitting in the cab at the time.
The male, a 33 year-old Berkeley resident, was arrested for brandishing a replica firearm (PC 417.4) and prowling (PC 647(h)). During booking he made repeated, credible threats to assault and murder the booking officers, and attempted to punch an officer, and he was also booked for threats of violence against an executive officer (PC 69).
Following the arrest, BPD officers realized the same suspect may also have been responsible for a brandishing incident that occurred the same day around 2:25 a.m. near College Avenue and Haste Street. The nature of the incident and the suspect description is similar to the incident involving the male arrestee, and both cases were referred to the BPD Detective Division.
