Berkeley, California (Friday, February 12, 2021) - On January 2nd at 8:40 pm, Berkeley Police officers responded to a report of a robbery via metal chain at Walgreens (2190 Shattuck Avenue). An officer located the suspect a few blocks away. When the officer approached the suspect, the suspect brandished a long metal chain and threatened the officer, and other arriving officers. Several officers responded and attempted to negotiate and de-escalate the suspect, to gain his cooperation.

When officers subsequently attempted to take the suspect into custody, the suspect ignored the officers’ orders and advanced toward the officers. Less-than-lethal munitions were fired by officers and Officer Madison Albrandt discharged her firearm.

The suspect (Vincent Bryant, Male, 51 years old, San Francisco, CA) was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

The Alameda County District Attorney charged the suspect with three felonies: Armed Robbery (PC 211), Assault with a Deadly Weapon (PC 245), and Resisting an Executive Officer (PC 69).

This incident is being concurrently investigated by the Berkeley Police Department’s Homicide Detail and the Internal Affairs Detail. In accordance with our policy, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office was notified of this incident and Officer Albrandt was placed on administrative leave. The investigations are intended to gather all information to determine whether the officer’s actions fell within applicable law and department policy. Once completed and reviewed, the full investigations will be available to the public.

With these investigations still on-going, we created a Community Briefing Video of this incident for the public to view. This video was prepared in response to our community’s interest in such a significant event, and in accordance with state law.
