Press Contact: Byron White, Berkeley Police Department, (510) 981-5780TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED CARJACKING
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 10, 2021) - On February 9th at 8:50 pm, a man in his 50’s parked his vehicle on the 1900 block of Grant Street and was walking away when two teenage suspects approached him from behind and demanded his car keys. When the man turned around, he saw one of the suspects pointing a rifle at him.
Although it was a scary situation, the man believed the rifle was probably a toy gun and walked away. After following after the man a few steps, the suspect stopped when he saw the man walking up to a nearby residence.
While searching the area of Sacramento Street and Delaware Street, officers spotted the suspects and they both fled in different directions—one suspect running in the direction of the BART station and the other riding a scooter in the direction of Hearst Street through Ohlone Park.
Several officers responded to the area and were able to detain both suspects—one in the North Berkeley BART parking lot (a 15-year-old Richmond male) and the other inside Ohlone Park (a 17-year-old Richmond male).
When officers searched the 15-year-old, they found a loaded AR-15 style rifle concealed inside his clothing. When officers searched the path the 17-year-old used to flee on his scooter, they found a loaded polymer non-serialized handgun (AKA Ghost gun) with a 30-round magazine.
Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted carjacking and several weapons related violations.
