PARKING METER CHANGES EFFECTIVE JUNE 1
Meters will be set at $0.50 per hour citywide

Berkeley, California (Thursday, May 28, 2020) - Parking meters will start operating again on Monday, June 1 to allow steady parking for those who need to come to local merchants as they reopen.

All meters citywide will be set to $0.50 per hour and operate from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. We will adjust rates based on the availability of parking in different areas. As rates change, the most recent information will be available on our parking meters webpage.

These demand responsive changes have been part of our data-driven approach to parking since 2014. We've used time limits and pricing of these public spaces to allow more people to move through our City, reduce congestion and adapt to needs - such as those required for this unprecedented pandemic.

Pay for parking by phone when possible

To maximize safety, we encourage everyone to use pay-by-phone options when possible. Surfaces that get touched a lot, like parking meters, create more opportunities for COVID-19 to spread.

Paying by phone is quick and easy. First, you'll need to register for an account on ParkMobile, which you can do by downloading the app for Apple or Android or online at parkmobile.io

Once you've found a parking space, enter the zone code on the app. You'll find the zone code on the bright green sticker on the meter. At single-space meters, you'll also be asked to enter the space number listed on the sticker. Choose how long you want to park, then confirm your license plate and payment method to start your session. You can set alerts to remind you when your session is about to expire.

If you don't have a smartphone, you can still pay by phone by calling 877-7272-5718. The process will be faster if you've signed up for an account online.

Garage parking

Two City garages are open for off-street parking, with reduced hours due to the pandemic.

Center Street Garage, 2025 Center Street

  • Monday-Friday: 5:15am-8pm
  • Saturday: 7am-8pm
  • Sunday: 12pm to 8pm

Telegraph Channing Garage, 2450 Durant Avenue

  • Monday-Saturday: 7am-8pm
  • Sunday: 8am-8pm

Garage hours are subject to change as the shelter-in-place order changes and demand of parking shifts. Current hours will be posted on our off-street parking webpage.

Enforcement still suspended for non-safety related violations

We continue to enforce violations that impact public safety or impede access to essential services, including:

  • red curbs and fire hydrants
  • disabled parking blue zones
  • street sweeping
  • yellow zones in commercial areas
  • double parking

We also continue our policy of not issuing citations for parking violations that do not have public safety impacts, including residential permit parking, school zones, time limits, and parking meters.

Paid parking is the law, regardless of whether citations are being issued.

Meters in commercial areas supporting merchants and customers by creating a steady supply of available parking. Our demand-based approach has another layer by using price and time limits to reduce demand for the most sought after areas. This practice has encouraged people to park in lower-demand areas and maximize public space, while also reducing drivers' circling for parking and the ensuing congestion and greenhouse gases.

This temporary enforcement suspension is one part of the City's efforts to support community members during this pandemic. We will adapt to continue to help people move to and through these areas.
