BEER, MUSIC AND TECH: BERKELEY MANUFACTURING TOURS OCT. 1-4
Register by Monday, Sep. 30

Berkeley, California (Thursday, September 26, 2019) - Learn how Berkeley manufacturers make beer, sake, phone booths, speakers, coffee, and various glass products as part of a series of tours we've helped organize.

During Berkeley's 2019 Manufacturing Week October 1-4, community members are invited to have a bit of fun on while learning about the innovative technologies, jobs and people involved in manufacturing in our city. The free tours are organized by local businesses and the City's Office of Economic Development, which helps local businesses access the resources, financing and information they need to thrive - and feel welcome in Berkeley.

Meyer Sound, The Rare Barrel, Zenbooth, Glassybaby, Takara Sake, and Adams & Chittenden are all Berkeley companies that manufacture products in our city, producing items from craft beverages and sound systems, to office equipment and laboratory quality glassware. One other tour is for Bay Area Co-Roasters, which we featured in Berkeleyside as part of our Discovered in Berkeley campaign

Additionally, as part of Manufacturing Week and the new Berkeley Ventures, Berkeley Values initiative (which encourages local tech and biotech companies to create inclusive workplaces and give back to our community), West Berkeley-based pharmaceutical manufacturer, Bayer, will host 20 Berkeley High School sophomore students to inspire them about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Organized by the Berkeley Startup Cluster, City of Berkeley's Office of Economic Development (OED), and the Institute for STEM Education, the event will give the students an opportunity to do hands-on science activities and explore different career pathways.

Berkeley's Manufacturing Day tours are part of a regional Bay Area initiative led by the Bay Area Urban Manufacturing Initiative to promote and revitalize urban manufacturing, an essential part of the Bay Area economy. With manufacturing jobs comprising more than 5% of the Berkeley workforce and almost 70 manufacturing businesses in the city's most concentrated manufacturing district, West Berkeley, manufacturing is an economic driver for our community. Moreover, the unique products produced locally serve as a draw for tourists - and the new Made in Berkeley microguides, produced by the city's convention and visitor bureau, Visit Berkeley, show visitors and residents alike where to find the businesses that are making their unique products on site.

To learn more about the other types of Berkeley businesses that are serving our community - and transforming our world - you can also visit discoveredinberkeley.com or follow Discovered in Berkeley on Instagram.

Both the Manufacturing Week tours and the Discovered in Berkeley campaign are ways that OED supports local companies. Visit the Office of Economic Development webpage to learn more about the other programs and services available to Berkeley businesses.
