PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH

Berkeley, California (Monday, September 16, 2019) - Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of where they are, what they do, how old they are, where they are from.  According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), more than 41,000 individuals die by suicide each year.

Know The Warning Signs

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are several warning signs to watch for:

  • Feeling like a burden
  • Being isolated
  • Increased anxiety
  • Feeling trapped or in pain
  • Increased substance abuse
  • Looking for a way to access lethal means
  • Increased anger or rage
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Expressing hopelessness
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Talking or posting about wanting to die
  • Making plans for suicide

If you or a loved one are having suicidal thoughts, there are people who want to help.  You do not have to go through this alone. In Berkeley, we are fortunate to have officers trained in Crisis Intervention as well a Mobile Crisis Team of trained psychologists and therapists.
