A fun, family friendly event at the Berkeley Marina

Berkeley, California (Thursday, March 28, 2019) - Come celebrate the Bay on April 6 for the Berkeley Bay Festival, which showcases activities and environmental education at the Berkeley Waterfront and around the region.

The festival, which was started in 1937 and is organized by the City of Berkeley, celebrates the earth and our Bay and includes free sailboat and dragon boat rides, live music, food, and a mobile freshwater fish exhibit.

The Berkeley Waterfront event takes place on the lawn area of Shorebird Park in front of the Shorebird Park Nature Center, a building noted for its straw bale architecture and its marine conservation and education programs.  A number of environmental education groups will have hands-on exhibits at the event, and the City Recreation Division will lead fun crafts and games in addition to a tot and Pre-K play area.

The event goes from 11am to 4pm. It includes special music and entertainment performances:

  • 11:30am - 12:30pm    The Bug Family Band, music for children and families
  • 12:45pm - 1:30pm       Asheba, children's entertainer using interactive Caribbean-inspired classics
  • 1:45pm - 2:30pm         Downtown Rhythm, classic soul dance music
  • 2:45pm - 3:45pm         Asheba, full band playing Calypso-Reggae dance music

We'll have a Bay wildlife-themed costume parade for children and adults.

The East Bay Regional Park District will also have a mobile fresh water fish exhibit, where you can see the large fish found in the delta and nearby lakes.  You can also see native salt water fish as well as native fresh water fish in large, 200-gallon tanks in Shorebird Park Nature Center's Classroom. There will be food for purchase from Kenny's Heart and Soul, Daniel's Caribbean Kitchen, Tacos Oaxaco and Nissa Espresso and Gelato Bar.

The Adventure Playground will be open for children to build with hammers, nails, saws and paint (with parental supervision). The Cal Sailing Club will provide free sailing for those 6 and older, while there will also be Dragon Boat rides for all ages. At the Information Table, pick up a "Passport to the Bay" with all the event exhibitors listed. Get your passport stamped from each table you visit and do their hands-on activity!

The festival is organized by the City's Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department, which organizes dozens of camps, classes and other activities for people of all ages. Get a glimpse at the Recreation division's offerings through the Activity Guide and sign up via our online registration portal. Call 510-981-5150 for more information.
