Artists’ questions due Oct. 11. Apply by Oct. 23

Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 04, 2018) - Calling all public artists! The City of Berkeley is seeking artists to create works of functional public art for the North Berkeley Senior Center and San Pablo Park.

2018-10-04 Artists Sought For Two Public Art ProjectsFunctional public art elements will be integrated into planned renovations at each site in order to beautify these spaces and contribute to their unique character. These artwork commissions will be selected through a Request for Qualifications, which is being issued by the City of Berkeley. Download the RFQ and application and apply by October 23, 2018 by 2 PM. Questions about the RFP are due by October 11, 2018.

For North Berkeley Senior Center: Artwork is being commissioned for the entry plaza and will be integrated with the seating and planted areas. This entry plaza will be a space where building users can gather to socialize, play games and enjoy time spent outdoors. The artwork will complement the plaza design and may include sculptural seating or other interactive and functional sculptural elements. It may also include decorative and integrated treatments to the space such as tile or other durable media for the vertical retaining walls. One artist or artist team will be selected for this project site and the artwork budget is up to $100,000 which is inclusive of all costs including artist fees, artwork materials, fabrication and installation.

The renovations will modernize the interior and improve the safety and functionality of the building, such as seismic requirements as a "care and shelter" facility for emergencies and also ADA requirements to make it more accessible to all people.

For San Pablo Park: One or two pieces of functional artwork are being commissioned in conjunction with the park renovations, which include a revamped play area and equipment for 5-12 year-olds as well as the complete renovation of the tennis courts.

Artists should integrate artwork into the soon-to-be-constructed park improvements. Proposed artwork may be free standing or surface mounted and could include landmark or wayfinding sculptural elements or sculptural seating. All artwork must be both durable and meet all codes and safety standards.

Up to two artists or artist teams will be selected for this project site and the combined artwork budget for all artwork for this site is $200,000 and is inclusive of all costs including artist fees, artwork materials, fabrication and installation. If more than one artist or artist team is selected, the total budget allocation will be split between the two selected artists/artist teams.

Over the next few months a selection panel comprised of community representatives, arts professionals and City facility representatives will review artists' applications and will invite three finalists to develop conceptual design proposals for each project site. The selection panel will reconvene in 2019 to review the proposals and to select the final artwork for each location.

Potential artists should download the application and apply by 2pm on October 23, 2018!
