COASTAL CLEANUP IN BERKELEY ON SEPT. 15
Groups of 10 or more need to pre-register

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, September 12, 2018) - Join other Berkeleyans this Saturday to help clean up local beaches, bays, and waterways during this year's Coastal Cleanup Day - which will focus on Aquatic Park, along our east shoreline and all around the Marina.

To participate in Berkeley on September 15, arrive between 9-10:30 am to the Shorebird Park NatureCoastal Clean Up 2018-09-12 Center, 160 University Ave. Groups of 10 or more must pre-register by e-mailing naturecenter@cityofberkeley.info. Cleanup events will last until 12 noon.

You'll get a safety orientation, sign waivers and staff will give you directions to sites that need volunteers.

Each year more than a million pounds of debris is removed from California beaches, rivers, creeks, lakes, and waterways, so the net environmental impact of this event is tremendously positive. The education we are able to impart through these cleanups has started to change people's consumer habits. The good feeling everyone gets is the icing on the cake.

Although we will have bags and gloves for your use, we would like to reduce this plastic usage. If you can, please:

  • Bring a bucket or reusable bag to the Cleanup for collecting trash (most Cleanup sites are equipped with dumpsters or roll-away bins so you can dump what you collect and bring your bucket or reusable bag back home).
  • Bring a lightweight pair of gardening gloves from home, instead of using the disposable plastic gloves we provide.

  • Bring a filled, reusable water bottle for your use at the Cleanup.

  • Parking is limited so please carpool or use public transportation (the  81 bus) or bike to the Cleanup. Use the pedestrian overpass and the Bay Trail to reach the staging area at the Shorebird Park Nature Center at 160 University Ave. Berkeley CA

Volunteers will help compile data about garbage for the largest research project in the world. The data that is collected is used to change laws and to educate people about how to be conscientious consumers. The top 10 trash items at cleanups are "single use" items, and 80 % of the trash we pick up comes from land based sources.  If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Each of us can make a difference every day. Adopt your neighborhood storm drain and before and after any storm, pick up the trash before it makes it into our waterways.

Last year during Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers picked up over 3,761 lbs of trash and 543 lbs of recyclables along the shorelines of the cities of Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville. The top items picked up by the 1,150 volunteers were 24,274 small plastic pieces;  5,184 bottle caps; 16,759 foam pieces; 9,078 cigarette butts; 7,241 food wrappers; 2,217 Foam Packaging items; 8,839 glass pieces; 2,505 straws and stirrers; 1,891 plastic bags; and 1,577 forks, knives and spoons.

This data volunteers collected help change laws and alert all of us as consumers about whether these purchases are worthwhile.

More information and children's waivers are available online at www.cityofberkeley.info/shorelinecleanup .

At the end of the Cleanup, when you return the filled out data card, you will get a raffle ticket for some great prizes.

This program is run by the City's Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department, whose Recreation Division organizes dozens of camps, classes and other activities for people of all ages.
